I'm realizing more and more that collaboration is the key to building trust. When anyone, and certainly kids, feels like you're both working toward the same goal, it's a lot easier to be open and honest and know the other person has your back. I also understand that when your own stress levels are high it can be really hard to do. But I do think it's so important if we want to build strong relationships with our kids.

Parenting really is no different than any other relationship! I'd be so mad if my husband punished me if he didn't like the way I did something, instead of talking it through with me collaboratively.

Parenting just gives us a lot more opportunities to work on these skills, because no adults I know are insistent on eating only off pink plates, mad that we can't have tv time as soon as breakfast is over, or angry because they have to brush their teeth 😂
